Podcast interview with Monika (Acrobat)
Monika is a part of the Acro community, and in this podcast, she will share with us her inspiring journey of overcoming injuries.
Injuries...always a dear old friend
In the circus, cheer and performing arts world, injuries are ever so common.
They are undoubtedly one of the most challenging things to experience, both physically and emotionally. In this episode, Monika's journey with overcoming injury reminds us that we are not alone, and that we are more resilient than we know.
Monika's Injury Story:
Monika's injury occurred during a birthday celebration while attempting a slackline. "It wasn't my first time," she explained, "and I was quite confident". Unfortunately, she fell badly and heard a crack. Initially, she wasn't overly concerned, thinking it was a minor sprain like previous toe injuries.
However, her recovery proved to be more challenging than anticipated.
Unwillingly Having Training Taken Away:
The injury significantly impacted Monika's life, particularly her participation in the upcoming London Acro Convention. "I couldn't do the workshops I wanted to," she shared. "Every workshop involved landing, and my foot was in pain."
This frustration was compounded by the start of the 100-handstand challenge, a goal she was passionate about. "I realized how much I use my feet, especially for jumping into handstands," Monika reflected.
Emotional and Mental Challenges:
The injury presented significant emotional challenges.
"It was very difficult," Monika admitted. "I felt isolated, and the thought of not being able to participate in the Acro community deeply affected me."
The idea of taking time off from activities she loved was difficult, even though she knew that this was necessary for healing.
Finding New Paths: Calisthenics and Community
Monika's journey towards recovery involved finding alternative ways to stay active. She kept an open mind, and started taking calisthenics classes: "It wasn't about Acro anymore; it was about getting stronger."
This shift in focus not only improved her physical strength but also reconnected her with her passion for movement and community.
Overcoming Challenges and Finding Strength:
Monika faced numerous challenges, including the mental and emotional impact of the injury. She emphasised the importance of acknowledging these challenges and finding ways to cope.
"It's important to acknowledge that it's hard," she said. "It's okay to feel sad and isolated."
Monika also highlighted the importance of self-compassion and finding alternative ways to stay active and connected to her community.
Injuries also offer the opportunity for a shift in focus: it allowed Monika to discover the benefits of training her weaker leg, which would have been something that is easily left aside if she was in her normal training routine.
Monika's inspiring story serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of setbacks, we can find new ways to move, grow, and connect with ourselves and our communities.
